After welcoming remarks by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Müller and the Dean, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Heipke, Mayor Thomas Hermann conveyed congratulations from the state capital of Hanover. All three congratulated the graduates and emphasised that the graduates would now be ambassadors for the faculty, LUH and the city of Hanover as they embarked on their future careers.
The title of the keynote speech sounded slightly futuristic. Prof. Dietmar Kracht, Managing Director of the Laserzentrum Hannover e. V. (LZH), presented various examples from current research under the title ‘Building with laser technology – applications for Earth, the Moon and Mars’. In addition to practical applications such as the use of lasers in weed control, the LZH is also aiming high: a laser system will soon be sent to the moon to explore whether lasers can convert moon dust into building material on site, which could benefit the colonisation of the moon.
Following the keynote speech, the graduates received certificates of honour from the chairmen of the examination board, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Haberlandt and Prof. Müller, as well as from Dean Prof. Heipke. Those celebrating anniversaries were also honoured. This year, two geodesists and one civil engineer celebrated their golden doctorates at the graduation ceremony.
Prizes from various sponsors were then awarded for outstanding academic achievements or for commitment to the student council.
The graduation ceremony concluded with a champagne reception in the atrium of the main building. In the evening, graduates, faculty members and guests continued the celebrations at the traditional winter ball organised by the Student Council Civil and Environmental Engineering.
